Suzy’s Bird notes
I’ve been noticing more bird song and calls this week - when the wind and rain lets me hear it! In particular, a Blue Tit has been calling for periods of several minutes at a time, proclaiming a territory and calling for a mate.
I am always listening for birdsong while I am inside my house. The insistent nature of this particular Blue Tit's calls means whatever task I am doing is disturbed, and I end up looking out of the window and watching birds for a while. My tasks can wait!
Have you been hearing birdsong where you live?
RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch
The RSPB's annual Big Garden Birdwatch takes place on the weekend of 29th - 31st January. It is very easy to take part - just choose an hour over that weekend, and settle yourself to watch birds in your garden, in your local park, or in any outside space around where you live.
And don't worry if you are not quite sure of the bird species in your area - there are lots of resources on the RSPB website to help you. Sign up for free - and take part in this awesome piece of Community Science!

Past guest Dan Rouse recently published 'How to Attract Birds to your Garden'
With different versions appropriate for U.K and U.S.A readers it is a great book describing how to make your garden bird-friendly. It includes ideas for plants, ponds and water-features, nest boxes and feeders and guides on how to identify the most commonly seen birds. There are also plenty of DIY activities for all ages to try.
